Art 202 Art History: Renaissance to Contemporary Art


Syllabus



Course Description
This course studies major developments in Western Art from the Renaissance to the present. We will cover not only the stylistic and aesthetic elements characteristic of a given period, but also the wider cultural and historical context within which the arts exist, and the relevance such a study can bring to our present understanding of ourselves and the world we live in.


Course Objectives & Competencies
Upon successful completion of Art 202, the student should be able to:


Demonstrate an understanding that art is a visible manifestation of cultural values, a mirror of “reality” of it’s time period.


Show a knowledge of major historical and cultural trends of Western art, including knowledge of various materials, techniques and art forms.


Demonstrate an understanding of the present by comparing and contrasting it with the past.


Analyze style both descriptively and comparatively.


Demonstrate a knowledge of the diffusion of trends and styles from one country to another over space and time.


Incorporate writing as a tool for analyzing art forms.

 

Grading
Grades are apportioned as follows:

1. Final - 20%

2. Midterm - 20%

3. Weekly Quizzes - 20%

4. Research Paper - 10%

5. Participation Online - 15%

6. Quality of Participation - 15%

90-100% Excellent

80-89% Above Average

70-79% Average

60-69% Below Average

0-59% Fail

There is no extra credit for this course. All time, effort and energy should be given to the course requirements
